我认为今天在欧洲，中国最亲密的盟友是塞尔维亚。疫情期间，中国的帮助加强了中塞两国的联系。但塞尔维亚不是欧盟的一部分，所以他们没有影响力，也不能在欧盟领土上帮助中国。

斯洛伐克人对中国非常开放。事实上，斯洛伐克是最早成为“一带一路”倡议的欧洲国家之一。

Historically the closest ally of European countries are the United States and while I think Europe became more open to cooperate with China during Trump's presidency, today Trump is not American president anymore and the EU - USA partnership is going back to the way it was before Trump. So how does it affect the EU - China relationship? Well since China is fighting with USA, it seems Europe will probably have to choose and between China and USA, and I can tell you, most European countries will choose USA. So today for China to find a friend in Europe may seem difficult.
I think today in Europe the closest ally China has is Serbia. Chinese help during covid epidemic helped to strengthen the bond between China and Serbia and made both Serbian government and Serbian people Chinese friends. But Serbia is not a part of EU so they have no influence and can't help China in EU territory.
Many Chinese people think in European union, Hungary is China best friend, which is kinda the truth, but there is one problem. China only has the support of Hungarian government, most Hungarian people actually don't like China and do not want Hungarian government to have good relations with China.
When the Hungarian government planned to build an overseas campus of Fudan University in Budapest, Hungarian people disagreed with that and there were huge protests in the streets. Even the Budapest Mayor Gergely Karacsony protested the Chinese university by renaming the streets around the campus site with such names such as “Dalai Lama Street,” “Free Hong Kong Road,” “Uyghur Martyrs’ Road,” and “Bishop Xie Shiguang Road.”
So why is Hungary so friendly to China? The thing is that Hungary is a part of EU but current Hungarian government is very anti EU so they will do anything possible to show them that. And since Hungary knows EU countries don't like China, they are using this as a weapon against EU.
Supporting China and blocking European union when they are dealing with China is a great tool for Hungarian prime minister Orban to control and also provoke EU.
When I found this question, I started thinking but why China has no interest in Slovakia? Slovakia is actually exactly that type of country that would support China, given a chance. Slovakia is nothing like Hungary, we are not trying to cause troubles to EU, we are actually very well behaved member of EU. But on the other hand we are not as dedicated a loyal to EU as many other countries.
Despite all the tremendous help we have gotten from European union, Slovak people still stand in the middle between the west and east, between democracy and communism and can't really decide which one they like more.
Even today when our government is very pro EU, pro European integration and supports western nations, our prime minister went to Russia to buy Russian vaccines. The only reason he did that is because he knows Slovak people, he knows not everyone in Slovakia likes European union and USA. Many Slovaks like Russia. Today Russia is disliked by almost everyone in the world, but not by Slovakia. Slovak people are still remembering how we lived together with our communist brothers Soviet union.
Western countries have no real experience with communism, other central European countries have the experience but consider it a bad one. Slovakia was a communist country for about 40 years and even though today democracy is promoted and praised by the government, also in media, in schools, everywhere many Slovak people actually miss communism. To most western people communism is evil, they are imagining in a communist country they would lose their human rights.
To Slovak people communism means safety. Around 40 percent of Slovak people believe that during communism Slovakia was better. People remember that communist government took care of them, gave them jobs, gave them free apartments, they felt safe unlike today when they have to take care of themselves.
If China wanted to turn Slovakia into Chinese supporter I truly believe they could do that. It would be pretty much impossible with western European countries, they hate communism with their whole heart, but Slovak people thanks to their history and own experience are not like that.
Slovak people do not hate China, they support China more than Hungarian people do. Slovak people do not see any problems with human rights in China, Slovak people also do not think communism is evil and as I said many Slovak people miss the times when Slovakia had communist government.
Slovak people are very open minded when it comes to China. In fact Slovakia was the first country to become part of Belt and road initiative, but then nothing much happened. There are no projects, no plans for cooperation with China. To Slovakia it seems like China just ignored us.
Today the problem is that to Slovak people China is too unknown, too far away, they have no contact, no connection to China, therefore they have no reason to stand up as a Chinese friend. But I believe if there is more cooperation between China and Slovakia, if we have a chance to develop a closer relationship, our countries can become very close, because we have a lot in common.
